This volume comprises a social history of Robert Smithson's earthworks and their critical reception. In his analysis of the artist's personal writings and art works, Ron Graziani demonstrates how the earthworks were part of an aesthetic and civic fault line that ruptured in the 1960s. Moreover, Graziani reveals how Smithson's earthworks formed part of the "new conservationism" in the late 1960s and how it gave material form to the contradictions of a sociological issue, inseparable from its economic legacy.
Hello, I have not read this text, however I was a grad. student of Dr. Ron Graziani in the mid 1990s, I am now a 49 year old fellow. I want to speak regarding the author of this text, Dr. Ron Graziani. I want to share, even after thirty plus years leaving the classroom of Dr. Graziani; that he is one of the most brilliant thinkers/professors I ever studied under. His ideas, theories, and concepts of "framing" life I still implement in my thought process today. I was a college level fine art and graphic design instructor as well as director of programs for twenty plus years. Now I am a pastor. I am ever indebted to Dr. Graziani for his sharing of "how to think- how to frame" ideas and thoughts.... Just my humble two cents :-)
