Hiebert's foundational study opensthe world of nature as a major aspectof biblical thought. It lays to rest thetraditional dichotomy between natureand history that has been so long readinto the Bible and Israel's religion, redeeming the natural world as therealm of human life and God's care.
Hiebert makes a strong case for his claim (that the J strand is from the perspective of the natural world, not human history). He also does an excellent job of pointing out that the Priestly creation story perspective is over emphasized. I would note that to make sense of this book one should be familiar with the theories of Israel’s formation and the strands in the Torah/ Pentateuch.
